2026 Home Safety Checklist: Simple Changes that Prevent Falls and Accidents

Falls are not an inevitable part of aging—especially at home. With some thoughtful home modifications, many falls can be prevented, and everyday tasks can become easier and less tiring.

Researchers have found that home modifications are one of the most effective ways to reduce falls and support aging in place, particularly when combined with other strategies like exercise and vision care.

Why fall-prevention home modifications matter

  • Falls are common. About 1 in 4 adults over 65 falls each year, and more than half of those falls happen at home. National Institute on Aging
  • The impact is serious. Falls can lead to fractures, loss of independence, and fear of falling again—which often causes people to move less and lose even more strength and balance. National Institute on Aging

Think of home modifications as tools to support independence, not signs of “giving up.”  Use this checklist to identify improvements that support safer aging at home.

 Improve Lighting & Visibility

Why: Aging eyes need more light to see steps, edges, and obstacles.
Benefits: Clearer pathways, fewer nighttime missteps, safer outdoor access.

  • Brighten stairways, hallways, and bathrooms with LED bulbs
  • Add nightlights between bedroom and bathroom
  • Install motion-sensor lights indoors and outdoors
  • Improve lighting inside closets and at entryways

 Add Supportive Features

Why: Secure handholds reduce loss of balance and make transitions safer.
Benefits: More stability on stairs, safer bathroom use, easier transfers.

  • Grab bars in showers, tubs, and next to toilets
  • Handrails on both sides of indoor stairs
  • Support poles or bed rails for getting in/out of bed
  • Sturdy exterior railings on steps and porches

 Reduce Slipping & Tripping Hazards

Why: Clutter, loose flooring, and poor organization cause many preventable falls.
Benefits: Safer navigation, especially with walkers, and fewer unexpected obstacles.

  • Remove or secure loose throw rugs
  • Repair uneven floors or carpeting
  • Keep pathways wide and free of clutter
  • Organize cords and cables against walls
  • Store frequently used items at waist height

 Make Bathrooms Safer

Why: Wet surfaces and tight spaces make bathrooms a top fall risk.
Benefits: Easier bathing, safer transfers, increased independence.

  • Raised toilet seats for easier standing
  • Shower chairs or benches for seated bathing
  • Handheld showerheads to reduce reaching and twisting
  • Walk-in or low-threshold showers to avoid high steps
  • Non-slip mats in tubs and on tile floors

 Improve Outdoor & Winter Safety

Why: Ice, poor lighting, and uneven surfaces create serious outdoor hazards.
Benefits: Safer access to the home, reduced winter falls, and better visibility at night.

  • Shovel and treat walkways promptly for ice
  • Use ice melt, sand, or cat litter for traction
  • Add non-slip mats at entryways
  • Keep walkways clear of hoses, tools, and debris
  • Install bright motion-activated lighting for steps and paths

Add Smart Home & Simple Tech Supports

Why: Technology reduces the need to cross dark rooms, bend, or rush.
Benefits: Hands-free lighting, safer nighttime movement, improved security.

  • Voice-activated lights or smart plugs
  • Video doorbells or smart locks
  • Timed or motion-sensor nightlights
  • Simple activity-monitoring systems

 Reorganize for Safety & Accessibility

Why: Reducing physical strain lowers fall risk and makes daily tasks easier.
Benefits: Less stair use, safer movement, improved comfort and mobility.

  • Move essential living spaces to the first floor if possible
  • Widen or clear pathways for mobility devices
  • Lower closet rods and add pull-out shelving
  • Rearrange furniture to create open walking space
